Impaired Professional:
Mr. Green- VP of Marketing, AP Adversting LLP.
He is highly efficient and a valued member of the management team and has been working at the firm for 20 years.
-Behavior in the Workplace: Snapping at employees, calling out sick on Mondays, Verbal confrontations with coworkers.
-Underlying Problem: Cocaine Abuse
-Solution for Managers: Management Referral: The EAP counselor spoke to the management and HR team regarding the employee. Provided valuable guidance on how to approach Mr. Green and assist him in seeking treatment.
-Solution for employee: Attended Intensive Outpatient Treatment, completed EAP and Treatment Recommendations successfully, has received a promotion within the firm, reports 1 yr sobriety.
Safety Sensitive and Substance Abuse:
Mr. Brown- Chief Lineman, ABC Electric Company
Works on high voltage power lines
-Behavior in the Workplace: Attendance issues, Coworkers report smelling alcohol on breath, 2 accidents in company vehicles, Extreme defensiveness when confronted about issues.
-Underlying Problem: Prescription Drug Abuse and Alcohol Dependence
-Solution for Managers: Case conference with management team, labor relations, union representatives, and EAP case mangers regarding how to handle the case. EAP provided guidance on approaching Mr. Brown. EAP closely managed the case and worked with the treatment facility on setting a return to work date in order to ensure the safety of the client and the workplace.
-Solution for employee: Attended Inpatient, and Intensive Outpatient Treatment. Client was able to sustain continued sobriety.
Paranoid/Delusional Professional:
Ms. Black- Engineer, RT Intelligence and Data Security Firm
Client works with federal government clearance on numerous data security and intelligence projects.
-Behavior in workplace: Displaying bizarre behavior in the workplace, talking to herself at work, verbalizing suspensions that coworkers are watching her off the job and checking her email without her permission, becoming verbally aggressive within the workplace towards coworkers, writing angry emails to HR and management, attempting to listen to coworkers conversations, closely following coworkers around office, creating uncomfortable work environment.
-Underlying Problem: Delusional Disorder
-Solution for Managers: Mandatory Referral, EAP assisted Human Resource managers in addressing client’s behaviors within the workplace as well as coworkers concerns. The EAP case mangers also helped coordinate an independent evalution to be preformed.
-Solution for employee: Client was able to receive the appropriate treatment and has denied any future issues in the workplace.
Harassment:
Mrs. Orange- Medical Director, AB Medical Center
Head of Medicine at AB Medical Center, Manages at team of 75 doctors, 115 nurses and other medical staff.
-Behavior in the workplace: Receiving complaints of inappropriate behavior, touching of male staff members, asking several nurses and doctors on dates, inappropriate email correspondence and content.
-Underlying Problem: Sexual Addiction
-Solution for Managers: Mandatory Referral: EAP provided Human Resources with a referral for a legal consult regarding this case and also encouraged documentation of complaints regarding the issues presented. EAP assisted and coached Human Resource Managers on how to approach the client.
-Solution for Employee: EAP worked with client to identify what issues where affecting her behavior both on the job and at home. Provided client with individual counseling referral to address her sexual addiction, and later provided her with a couple’s counselor to assist in healing her relationship with her husband. The client is in recovery at this time and has continued to utilize the referrals.
Domestic Violence:
Ms. Blue-Office Manager, ABC Education Inc.
Supervises a small staff on daily administrative duties.
-Behavior in the workplace: Client is involved in an abusive relationship at home. She has been calling out sick more frequently and when she does return to work has been observed with physical markings of the abuse. Numerous coworkers have expressed concern for her well being.
-Underlying Problem: Emotional and Physical Abuse
-Solution for Manager: EAP consulted with Human Resources on how to best approach this sensitive issue with the client and encourage her to call for assistance. The EAP also encouraged HR to speak with security regarding the restraining order on the job.
-Solution for Employee: EAP assisted the client in moving both herself and her children out of the home and gave a legal referral and information on getting restraining order on the abuser. The EAP found a shelter in the area that provided both safe housing and therapeutic services for the client and her children. The client is now living in a safe home and is currently working with providers privately.
Workplace Violence:
Mr. Red- Chief Foreman, C&E Construction
-Behavior in the workplace: Mr. Red has reported to be having continued verbal confrontations with a fellow foreman at the worksite. These confrontations continue to elevate despite numerous warnings to both parties by HR. Mr. Red displays increased verbal aggression on the job site, and the had an incident on the job when he became threatening toward another employee and threw an object at him. Several of Mr. Red’s coworkers expressed concern about their safety on the job.
-Underlying Problem: Anger
-Solution for Manager: EAP and HR discuss the options for disciplining the client and ensuring the safety of the workplace. EAP also provided the management and HR team with procedures to secure safety in the workplace.
-Solution for Employee: Mandatory Referral: The EAP case manager spoke with the client on his inability to control his anger and provided referral to an individual counselor as well as an anger management group in the area. The EAP also provided the client with skill builder online resources to work on more appropriate coping mechanisms for anger. The client was able to deal with his anger more effectively and continues to utilize the EAP referrals on a voluntary basis at this time.
